6 drinks dangerous to brain health

In our brain, unlike smartphones and computers, the place never ends. The possibilities of our memory are endless. But why then sometimes we forget important “little things”? Maybe because instead of high-quality balanced nutrition, the brain gets a dummy? Or worse, liquid calories, dangerous to his health.

What not to drink if you want to preserve your memory and intelligence to a ripe old age? By MedAboutMe.

1- Sugary drinks: memory impairment

Industrial fruit juices, cola, kvass … All of these drinks are united by a high sugar content and questionable health benefits. And scientists associate their regular use with a deterioration in short-term memory and impairments in the work of the hippocampus – a region of the brain that is directly involved in the processes of memorization and orientation in space. Memory problems and difficulty with coordination can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Such data were published in 2017 by neurological experts from Boston Medical University in the USA after a study involving 4276 volunteers.

2- Broths and soups: increased risk of stroke
Despite the fact that chefs consider broths to be a full-fledged dish, nutritionists consider them to be drinks. The aromatic hot first offered by fast food establishments and the soups and broths graciously corked by the manufacturer seem like a great snack idea. Especially during time trouble, when every minute counts. However, they can be costly for brain health. And all because of the record amount of salt and fat.

“Too much salt has detrimental health effects, including high blood pressure,” says general nutritionist Richard Haddad. But the main danger is that hypertension is an important marker of an increased risk of stroke, which has dire consequences for the brain.

3- Drinks high in caffeine: exacerbate stress

A cup of coffee has many health benefits and is perhaps the most popular way to welcome the new day. But “the dose determines the poison.” High caffeine content in your daily diet will not benefit your body, but on the contrary, can cause a number of serious problems.

Mark Hyman, M.D., says that the caffeine in coffee can increase the concentration of catecholamines when consumed frequently. This, in turn, leads to increased levels of cortisol as well as insulin, which makes the person feel unwell.

In addition, according to another expert, pharmacist Bernard Dowtres, caffeine acts suppressively on adenosine receptors, while adenosine plays an important role in protecting brain cells from the effects of stress. Thus, caffeine increases the likelihood of insomnia, confusion, irritability.

The National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm) has published data that the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease is 1.99 times higher in those regions where tap water has a high aluminum content. This is the amount of more than 0.1 mg per 1 liter of drinking water. Hence the conclusion: not all water is good for health.

5- Energy drinks: increased risk of stroke

Lots of caffeine and even more sugar. Approximately this formula is used to produce energy drinks of most well-known brands. Therefore, they invigorate a little better than coffee, but they also pose a serious threat to health.

The National Health Safety Agency (Anses) has published a report according to which frequent consumption of energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure, and therefore an increased risk of stroke.

A 2015 study by the Mayo Clinic shows a clear link between energy intake and the release of stress hormones. The level of norepinephrine in the participants in the experiment increased by a record 74%, and it is known that stress is the main enemy of the health of the body and the brain in particular. Another study shared by Military Medicine shows that soldiers who drank two or more servings of energy drinks a day were more likely to have mental health problems, aggression and fatigue.

6- Alcoholic drinks: increased risk of dementia
Recent studies by scientists show that drinking alcohol, even in “medicinal” doses, does not bring any benefit to the body. Even if we are talking about such a conditionally healthy drink as red wine.

“Alcohol acts like a neurotoxin,” explains nutritionist Alexandra Retion. “Influencing the neurotransmission of impulses, it makes us lose the ability to memorize, meaningful action, orienteering in space.” In addition, according to a study carried out by specialists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, two servings of alcohol a day increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke by 1.6 times!
